Raising A Super Puppy
A book review by Kathleen Dahmer

Have you ever wished there was a good, inexpensive book that addresses the typical new owner problems that you could send with your puppies when they go to their new homes? “Super Puppy”®, How To Raise The Best Dog You’ll Ever Have! by Peter J. Vollmer is just such a book. My veterinarian includes it in the puppy pack given to clients when they bring their pup in for his first visit.

Peter Vollmer has a degree in psychology and a teaching certificate. His work with the Wisconsin Humane Society made him realize that less than 35% of all family dogs live out their lives with their original owners. Many of the reasons that dogs end up in a shelter include excessive barking, biting, destructive chewing and failure to become housebroken. This 39 page paperback addresses each of these issues as well as several other areas. The text is easy to read and follow. The illustrations make understanding even easier.

The chapter on subordination is wonderful. Peter explains how all puppies are pushy. They survive in the pack by advancing as far as possible within the order of the pack. To have a successful relationship with your puppy, you must become his pack leader. He recommends a series of easy to perform exercises that teach your pup that you are the pack leader and have physical control over him. He also learns to enjoy your hands on him so that removing something from his mouth or grooming is easier for him to accept.

How to read a dog’s body language, introduce your pup to new situations without causing problems, use a crate, how and when to discipline, how to stop a puppy from jumping up onto you, why exercise is so important to your new youngster and some appropriate puppy games are all covered in this quick and easy to read book. There are also sections on selecting a breed and then choosing the right puppy for you as well as how breeders can provide sensory stimulation to their puppies before they go to their new homes. This stimulation will help a pup more readily adjust to family activity.

With a little work and dog understanding on your part as explained in his book, you also can have a wonderful pup. Peter’s advice will help you raise a puppy that has manners, is a pleasure to be with and a welcome addition to your family - your own Super Puppy!
